Carmen Boullosa – Lone Star Book Festival (Kingwood, TX)
April 8, 2016 @ 3:00 pm - 4:15 pmFree
“Literary Scenes from Far and Away” – Room CLA 114
In his Nobel Prize Lecture (2010), the writer Maria Vargas Llosa reminisced: “I learned to read at the age of five, in Brother Justiniano’s class at the De la Salle Academy in Cochabamba, Bolivia. It is the most important thing that has ever happened to me. Almost seventy years later I remember clearly how the magic of translating the words in books into images enriched my life, breaking the barriers of time and space and allowing me to travel with Captain Nemo twenty thousand leagues under the sea, fight with d’Artagnan, Athos, Portos, and Aramis against the intrigues threatening the Queen in the days of the secretive Richelieu, or stumble through the sewers of Paris, transformed into Jean Valjean carrying Marius’s inert body on my back.” In this panel, listen to fiction that sweeps you away, as it did for Llosa, to far off places. You’ll hear men and women, gripped by the Christian spirit, dance barefoot in the mountains. The ice of Wisconsin will crunch beneath your feet. Accents as close as Mexico and as far away as Poland will grace your ears. In this panel, you’ll experience worlds of a different color without ever having to leave Kingwood.
