Deep Vellum welcomes Sebastián Páramo as Poetry Editor. Under this role, he will oversee acquisitions, editing, and marketing support for Deep Vellum’s books of poetry, and will work on new poetry-specific programming in Dallas and internationally.
Páramo will oversee the acquisition of approximately five poetry titles per year, with his first acquisitions for Deep Vellum slated to release in Fall of 2021. His acquisitions will grow Deep Vellum’s current poetry catalog, which includes A Grave is Given Supper by Dallas-based poet Mike Soto and The Nightgown and Other Poems by Austin-based poet/writer Taisia Kitaiskaia, alongside upcoming titles in 2021 by Ross John Farrar, Julie Poole, and Logen Cure.
Páramo is a CantoMundo Fellow, and his work has recently appeared or is forthcoming in New England Review, Crazyhorse, Salamander, TriQuarterly, Missouri Review, Blackbird, among others. He is the founding editor of The Boiler and has received scholarships and awards from Sewanee Writers’ Conference, Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, and the Vermont Studio Center. He holds a PhD in English and Creative Writing at the University of North Texas and will be the 2021 Jesse H. Jones Fellow through the Dobie Paisano Fellowship Program, sponsored by the University of Texas at Austin and the Texas Institute of Letters.
About his new role, Páramo says: “I'm really excited to work with Will Evans and the Deep Vellum team on expanding literary Dallas. Poetry is more vital than ever, and I look forward to showcasing poets' work that can continue making Dallas a literary hub.”
Will Evans, Executive Director, adds: “I first got to know Sebastián through his amazing Pegasus Reading Series reading series 6 years ago, and over the years have admired his work building a literary community in the Dallas-Fort Worth area through various reading series and events like the Deep Ellum Lit Hop, editing the incredible journal The Boiler, and writing amazing poetry of his own, all while pursuing his PhD in Creative Writing at the University of North Texas.”
Páramo joins David Shook, editor of Deep Vellum’s poetry in translation imprint Phoneme, in supporting Deep Vellum’s poetry catalog. Between both imprints, Deep Vellum’s catalog will grow to include emerging and established poets across the world represented by about 10 titles per year. Deep Vellum will also continue to publish international fiction and nonfiction, alongside titles through its imprints A Strange Object and La Reunion.
