Call for Departmental Interns Fall 2023
Deep Vellum seeks interns for part-time educational internships Fall 2023, running from late August 2023 through mid-December. All internships are remote unless otherwise specified.
Through this internship, regardless of the position you choose, you will learn the ins and outs of working at an independent publisher and will get face time with various departments. Our goal is that by the end of the season, you’re able to use the vocabulary of a small publisher, know your way around the departments, and have learned more about what it takes to bring out a book and support its journey.
In order to apply, please send an email to jobs@deepvellum.org. In the title of your email, please use the phrase “Internship Fall 2023.” In your email, please attach your resume and cover letter, alongside the departmental positions for which you’d like to be considered.
Departments seeking interns:
Deep Vellum Bookstore (hybrid/in-person at our Dallas store):
Interns will gain on-the-ground experience at our in-person hub, assisting with programming and book clubs as well as the physical management and organization of inventory, shelving, and fulfillment.
Rights and Publicity (10 hours/week):
Interns will prepare for fair attendance at Frankfurt and other events. They will also assist in building a rights and publicity database from the ground up, alongside the Publicity/Programming Director and Rights Director. In addition, interns will gain experience drafting press releases, media kits, and submission letters.
Production (10-20 hours/week):
Production interns will learn about the practical side of how a manuscript becomes a physical book, from Word Doc to printer. This internship will include learning about the logistics that keep the wheels of publishing turning, as well as giving interns significant training and experience in copyediting, proofreading, and design/layout.
Marketing (10 hours/week):
Interns will participate in a variety of tasks to familiarize themselves with the Deep Vellum, Phoneme, A Strange Object, and La Reunion catalogs. Tasks will include research and assistance with forthcoming titles, including book descriptions, press releases, and eBlasts, alongside technical aspects of metadata and SEO.
Editorial (10 hours/week):
Interns will work with either A Strange Object editor Jill Meyers on fiction and nonfiction or poetry editor Sebastián Paramo to bring new titles to our catalog. From reading submissions and producing reader’s reports to assisting with copyediting, interns will gain a deeper sense of the editorial process with a one-on-one relationship.
Dalkey Archive Press general intern (flexible schedule):
Learning opportunities/daily tasks for interns will include assisting with marketing and publicity, researching authors, copyediting, working with contracts, reading submissions, and learning about the various initiatives at Dalkey Archive across departments. Interns will gain a broad vision of the publishing industry, including both Dalkey Archive specifically and the greater state of independent and nonprofit presses in the U.S.
