May Update
Dear readers,
We’ve been busy here at Deep Vellum! We just released our 27th and 28th books, are gearing up for the publication of our 29th and 30th (!), and are in the midst of some Top Secret Projects. And what’s more: We’re psyched that Blood of the Dawn and Eve Out of her Ruins are finalists for the 2017 CLMP Firecracker Award!
Eve was also a Best Translated Book Award finalist, and, thanks to you, an Albertine Prize finalist as well!
Congratulations to the winners of the BTBA for fiction and poetry, respectively, Chronicle of the Murdered House from Open Letter Books and Extracting the Stone of Madness from New Directions Publishing! And congrats to Bardo or Not Bardo, also from Open Letter, for winning the inaugural Albertine Prize!
New Releases
This week, we’re celebrating the release of Not One Day and The Golden Cockerel & Other Writings!
Not One Day
“A master of thought and language, an astounding authority and elegance.” ― Anne Serre, Marie Claire
Not One Day, winner of the prestigious Prix Médicis, is guided by the maxim: “Not one day without a woman.” What follows is renowned Oulipo member Anne Garréta’s intimate, erotic, and sometimes bitter collection of memories, written under strict constraints, with each chapter written each day describing a past lover or love, exploring the interaction between memory, fantasy, and desire.
Sounds amazing, right? Reviewers agree!

The Golden Cockerel & Other Writings
“Among contemporary writers in Mexico today [1959], Juan Rulfo is expected to rank among the immortals.” — The New York Times Book Review
“Rulfo is our most important author.” — Yuri Herrera, author of Signs Preceding the End of the World
The Golden Cockerel is the legendary lost novella from Mexico’s mega-influential Juan Rulfo, published here in English for the first time on the 100th anniversary of his birth, introducing this masterwork into Rulfo’s timeless canon, collected with previously-untranslated or hard-to-find writings by the author, most never before published in English, heralding a landmark event in world literature.
Though just released, The Golden Cockerel & Other Writings has been amassing some fantastic reviews. Check them out below:

Upcoming Releases
Need more books on your to-read list? Of course you do!
Our next two publications are not to be missed: Heavens on Earth by Carmen Boullosa, translated by Shelby Vincent, and Moonbath by Yanick Lahens, translated by Emily Gogolak.
Heavens on Earth
“A luminous writer . . . Boullosa is a masterful spinner of the fantastic.” — Miami Herald
Three narrators from different historical eras are each engaged in preserving history in Carmen Boullosa’s Heavens on Earth. As her narrators sense and interact with each other over time and space, Boullosa challenges the primacy of recorded history and asserts literature and language’s power to transcend the barriers of time and space in vivid, urgent prose.
Moonbath
“A novel of violent beauty.” — Le Monde
Moonbath is the award-winning saga of a peasant family living in a small Haitian village, told through four generations of voices, recounting through stories of tradition and superstition, voodoo and the new gods, romance and violence, the lives of the women who struggled to hold the family together in an ever-shifting landscape of political turmoil and economic suffering.
