Six of your new favorite books:
April: Serhiy Zhadan – Voroshilovgrad (translated by Reilly Costigan-Humes and Isaac Wheeler) — a post-Soviet magical realist romp through now-war-torn eastern Ukraine from the most prominent poet, writer, rockstar, and pro-democracy activist in all of Ukraine today; and Zhadan will tour the US & Canada for three weeks in April (!), including a couple days in Texas, more info coming soon!
April: Michèle Audin – One Hundred Twenty-One Days (translated from the French by Christiana Hills) — the second book by a woman member of the Oulipo in English, an emotionally resonant, powerful book featuring lots of codes, intertextual references, and style shifts…
May: Fouad Laroui – The Curious Case of Dassoukine’s Trousers (translated from the French by Emma Ramadan) — the long-awaited English-language debut, a hilarious (like LOL-funny) and touching story collection by the most prominent contemporary Moroccan author; Laroui will be in NYC at the end of March for a Words Without Borders gala!
June: Carmen Boullosa – Before (translated from the Spanish by Peter Bush) — dark coming of age novel that won her Mexico’s most prestigious literary prize early in her career, and her bestselling book of all time; Carmen will be in Texas for a week of events at the beginning of April and then at the PEN World Voices Festival in NYC in May!
July: Jung Young Moon – Vaseline Buddha (translated from the Korean by Yewon Jung) — mind-warpingly awesome descent into the subconscious from “South Korea’s Kafka,” also their tallest and most handsome author, hands-down; he’ll come to the US in June for the Bay Area Book Festival!
August: Noemi Jaffe – What are the Blind Men Dreaming? (translated from the Portuguese by Julia Sanches, and from the Serbo-Croatian by Ellen Elias-Bursac) — three-part hybrid nonfiction/lyric essay/fiction tells the story of a Holocaust survivor making her way to Brazil after liberation from Auschwitz in diary form, her daughter (Noemi) reflecting on visiting Auschwitz for the first time and having her mother’s diary translated, and her granddaughter (Noemi’s daughter) writing on what it means to be the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor in Brazil 70 years after the war, told directly in each woman’s voice in three parts, like nothing I’ve ever read before…
Also just confirmed that Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer is coming to Dallas March 17-19; Leila Chudori is coming to the US for a full monthlong tour in April; Ófeigur Sigurðsson just arrived to the 100 West residency in Corsicana, Texas for a monthlong writer’s residency, we’ll have an event for him at the end of the month in our new bookstore…and on February 23rd, we will discuss Jón Gnarr’s The Pirate in the second-ever Deep Vellum Book Club in our new store, join us…plus I’m heading to NYC next week for the launch of Lina Meruane’s Seeing Red at McNally Jackson where Lina will read and discuss her work with Valeria Luiselli, it’s already a busy spring!
