Congratulations to Leila S. Chudori!

This year’s fiction category focuses on authors from Asia-Pacific countries who have published a work of fiction in English or in English translation. Finalists will be announced on August 5, and the winners of each category will be announced at an awards ceremony in New York on September 26, 2016. Winners will be awarded $40,000 and will be featured on ft.com. Runners-up will receive $5,000.
Congratulations to all the nominees, and especially to Leila and translator John McGlynn, who translated the novel to English for us all to enjoy!
Leila’s novel is a profound, epic historical fiction account of life in Indonesia and in Paris among political exiles during the reign of Suharto, from the 1965 anti-communist massacre of over a million alleged Communists and their sympathizers and its aftermath, through Suharto’s overthrow in 1998. It is a brilliant, tragic, and moving story of love, family, and food. Pick it up today at Deep Vellum Bookstore or your local independent bookseller, or order a copy through our Online Store!
