Deep Vellum is so excited to announce that we’ve been approved to receive a grant from the NEA! This $10,000 grant will support our book titles and programming in 2021, ranging from translation of literary works around the world to works from Texas and the United States.

Books that will be supported by this grant include:

FEM, by Magda Cârneci, translated by Sean Cotter (Romania)

Out of the Cage, by Fernanda García Lao, translated by Will Vanderhyden (Argentina)

Bright Specimen, by Julie Poole (Texas)

Lone Star, by Mathilde Walter Clarke, translated by Martin Aitken and K.E. Semmel (Denmark)

Welcome to Midland, by Logen Cure (Texas)

Habitus, by Radna Fabias, translated by David Colmer (Netherlands)

The New Adventures of Helen: Magical Tales by Ludmilla Petrushevskaya (Russia)

"We at Deep Vellum are so honored for the NEA to continue to support our mission to bring the world into conversation through literature, with writers and translators from Texas like Logen Cure, Julie Poole, and Sean Cotter to have their work supported alongside renowned international writers like Ludmilla Petrushevskaya and Mathilde Walter Clark,” said Publisher and Executive Director Will Evans. “We are so excited to share these incredible works with readers and to keep finding new ways to deepen our roots in Literary Dallas as we reach readers around the world!"

Deep Vellum is among 1,073 projects across America totaling nearly $25 million that were selected during this first round of fiscal year 2021 funding in the Grants for Arts Projects funding category.

In addition to this grant, Deep Vellum translators JD Pluecker and Sean Cotter have been approved to receive NEA Literature Translation Fellowships for translations of works for Deep Vellum. JD Pluecker is the translator of forthcoming Basura/Trash by Sylvia Aguilar Zéleny. Sean Cotter is the translator of forthcoming Solenoid, by Mircea Cărtărescu. Both are set for publication in 2022.

“The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support this project from Deep Vellum,” said Arts Endowment Acting Chairman Ann Eilers. “Deep Vellum is among the arts organizations across the country that have demonstrated creativity, excellence, and resilience during this very challenging year.”
